Navigating Controversy Among Evangelical Leadership: Maintaining Evangelistic and Conservative Outreach Efforts in the Aftermath of Organizational Scandals
Evangelical organizations, dedicated to spreading the Gospel, performing effective conservative political outreach, and making disciples often find themselves at the center of controversies.
These controversies, whether doctrinal disagreements, ethical lapses, or social issues can significantly hinder their evangelistic efforts. The impact of such controversies can range from decreased donor support and volunteer engagement to damaged reputations and a loss of credibility with the broader community. Therefore, it is crucial for Evangelical Leadership to develop effective strategies for navigating controversy, ensuring that their mission of evangelism remains viable and impactful in the long term.
Over the last few years, Evangelicals have witnessed an onslaught of scandals within their leadership ranks. It’s become more poignant with the rise in social media and the general public’s ability to share controversial content, whether true or untrue.
The long-term effects can be devastating for leadership and the organizations they oversee if the stories are not handled strategically, ethically, and legally. More importantly, without a prominent communications expert and strategist to “handle matters,” Evangelical leaders can easily find themselves drowning in this sea of controversy with no way of escape.
This week, I want to focus on empowering Evangelical Leadership in this area of navigating controversy when it arises in their organizations, especially among their staff members. This topic is of great importance because most Evangelical organizations are working diligently to fulfill their vision and mission, especially in the area of effective evangelism and outreach. But what happens to that vision when leadership is falsely accused of something or when a leader’s staff members are involved in scandals that threaten the organization’s evangelistic efforts?
This week, we dive into solving these challenges.
Controversy is nothing new to me. In fact, my national virtual ministry was birthed out of it, a story I chronicle in my book, To My Beloveds: A Memoir of My Personal Comeback in the Aftermath of My Scandalous Story.
Controversy is a mark of leadership. And depending on the leader’s motives, intents, and purposes, that controversy can be converted into power or utter destruction.
When working with leader-clients in the Evangelical and conservative political spheres, I show them how to transform controversial persecution into potent power. And in this empowering post, I want to show you how to navigate controversy within your organization, focusing on key principles and practical approaches that safeguard evangelistic efforts.
One caveat to consider: My work of ministry and services are only given to leadership that is innocent of the charges or accusations leveled against them. Of all the scandals to handle, this area is most challenging and requires a specialized approach to an organization’s vision and mission. That’s where my leadership training and communications services come in.
However, for leadership that is guilty of the accusations against them, it is recommended to hire a public relations expert who specializes in that area. My services will not work for them.
Now, let’s get into this teaching.
Understanding the Nature of Controversy
Before developing strategies, it's essential to understand the nature of controversy within Evangelical organizations. Controversies are not monolithic; they arise from diverse sources and exhibit varying degrees of intensity.
Some controversies are doctrinal, stemming from disagreements over theological interpretations or evolving understandings of Scripture. Others are ethical, arising from alleged misconduct by leaders or members, or from differing views on moral issues. Still others are social, reflecting the tensions between Evangelical beliefs and broader societal norms.
Furthermore, controversies can be internal or external. Internal controversies occur within the organization, among its members or leaders. These might involve disagreements over leadership styles, financial management, or ministry priorities. External controversies, on the other hand, originate from outside the organization, often involving media scrutiny, public criticism, or legal challenges. Understanding the specific type and source of controversy is crucial for developing an appropriate response.
Core Principles for Navigating Controversy
Several core principles should guide Evangelical Leadership in navigating controversy:
Biblical Integrity: The Bible should be the ultimate source of truth and guidance. Decisions should be rooted in biblical principles, even when unpopular or challenging. This requires a deep understanding of Scripture and a commitment to applying it consistently.
Transparency and Honesty: Openness and honesty are crucial for building trust and maintaining credibility. Leaders should be transparent about the situation, admitting mistakes when they occur and providing accurate information to stakeholders. Withholding information or attempting to cover up wrongdoing will only exacerbate the problem.
Humility and Repentance: Leaders should demonstrate humility by acknowledging their limitations and seeking wise counsel. When mistakes are made, repentance and a willingness to make amends are essential for restoring trust and demonstrating integrity.
Empathy and Compassion: Controversies often involve hurting people. Leaders should demonstrate empathy and compassion towards those affected, listening to their concerns and offering support.
Justice and Fairness: A commitment to justice and fairness is crucial for ensuring all parties are treated with respect and dignity. Leaders should strive to resolve disputes in a way that is equitable and just, even when it is difficult.
Love and Grace: While upholding truth and justice, leaders should also extend love and grace to all involved. This involves forgiving those who have wronged the organization and seeking reconciliation where possible.
Focus on Mission: Throughout the controversy, it is essential to maintain a clear focus on the organization's core mission of evangelism. Decisions should be made in light of how they will impact the ability to share the Gospel and make disciples.
Becoming Legally-Minded: For the most part, Evangelical leadership, especially among smaller organizations, tend to avoid understanding their legal rights when it comes to controversy. As a communications expert, I readily urge my leader-clients to become legally-minded about all matters. That means knowing the laws surrounding online harassment, lies, slander, threats, and more. At no time should members of a congregation or staff members feel comfortable spreading lies about a leader in the virtual space; and there are current laws on the books to proactively protect leadership from such accusations.

Practical Strategies for Addressing Controversy
In addition to these core principles, Evangelical Leadership can employ several practical strategies for addressing controversy:
Proactive Crisis Communication Plan: Develop a comprehensive crisis communication plan with a communications expert familiar with handling controversies before a controversy arises. This plan should outline procedures for gathering information, communicating with stakeholders, and managing media inquiries. Identify a spokesperson who is trained to handle difficult questions and present the organization's perspective effectively.
Independent Investigation: When serious allegations arise, consider engaging an independent investigator to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry. This demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability, and can help to uncover the truth and identify areas for improvement.
Mediation and Reconciliation: When controversies involve interpersonal conflict, consider using mediation to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation. A neutral third party can help to bridge divides and find common ground.
Restorative Justice: In cases of wrongdoing, explore restorative justice approaches that focus on repairing harm, restoring relationships, and promoting accountability. This may involve restitution, community service, or other forms of reconciliation.
Policy Review and Reform: Controversies often highlight weaknesses in organizational policies and procedures. Use the opportunity to review and reform these policies to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. This may involve strengthening ethical guidelines, improving financial controls, or clarifying lines of authority.
Training and Education: Provide training and education to staff and volunteers on topics such as ethics, conflict resolution, and cultural sensitivity. This can help to prevent controversies from arising in the first place, and equip individuals to respond effectively when they do.
Engagement with Critics: While it is not always possible to satisfy every critic, leaders should be willing to engage in respectful dialogue with those who have legitimate concerns. This can help to build bridges and demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn.
Seek Wise Counsel: Leaders should surround themselves with a team of trusted advisors, including legal scholars, who can provide wise counsel and support during times of controversy.
Prayer and Discernment: Continually seek God's guidance through prayer and discernment. Understanding that ultimately leadership is accountable to God in their actions and decisions.
The Role of Public Relations
Effective public relations is crucial for navigating controversy and protecting the organization's reputation. When a controversy arises, the organization should proactively manage its public image by:
Developing a consistent and accurate message that addresses the concerns of stakeholders.
Engaging with the media to provide factual information and counter misinformation.
Using social media to communicate directly with supporters and address concerns.
Highlighting the organization's positive work and contributions to the community.
Being responsive to criticism and demonstrating a willingness to learn and improve.
It is important to avoid defensiveness or denial, and to focus on transparency, accountability, and a commitment to doing what is right.
Maintaining Evangelistic Focus Amidst Controversy
One of the greatest challenges during a controversy is maintaining focus on the organization's core mission of evangelism. It's easy to become consumed by the crisis and lose sight of the ultimate goal. To prevent this, leadership must:
Reiterate the organization's mission and vision regularly, reminding staff and volunteers of the importance of their work.
Continue to support evangelistic programs and initiatives, even during difficult times.
Find opportunities to share the Gospel in the midst of the controversy, demonstrating the transformative power of faith.
Encourage staff and volunteers to remain steadfast in their commitment to evangelism.
Pray for God's guidance and provision as the organization navigates the challenges.
By maintaining a clear focus on its mission, the organization can weather the storm and emerge stronger and more resilient.
The Long-Term Impact of Controversy
The way an Evangelical organization navigates controversy can have a significant long-term impact on its evangelistic efforts. If the organization handles the situation poorly, it can suffer irreparable damage to its reputation, lose the trust of its supporters, and diminish its ability to reach others with the Gospel. However, if the organization responds with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to doing what is right, it can emerge stronger and more credible.
Even in the midst of controversy, there are opportunities to demonstrate the love and grace of Christ. By responding with humility, compassion, and a willingness to forgive, the organization can model the values it espouses and attract others to the Gospel. Ultimately, the goal is not simply to survive the controversy, but to use it as an opportunity to grow in faith, strengthen relationships, and advance the cause of Christ.
It is important to remember that even after the controversy subsides, the organization must continue to learn from the experience and make necessary changes to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. This may involve strengthening ethical guidelines, improving financial controls, or enhancing communication strategies. By embracing a culture of continuous improvement, the organization can build resilience and ensure its long-term effectiveness in evangelism.
In Conclusion …
Navigating controversy is an inevitable part of leadership in Evangelical organizations. By adhering to core principles such as biblical integrity, transparency, humility, and a focus on mission, leaders can effectively address challenges and safeguard their evangelistic efforts. Practical strategies, including proactive crisis communication, independent investigations, and restorative justice approaches, can help to mitigate the damage and promote healing.
Ultimately, the way an organization responds to controversy will determine its long-term credibility and effectiveness in spreading the Gospel. By embracing a commitment to transparency, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement, Evangelical organizations can navigate challenges with grace and emerge stronger, more resilient, and more effective in fulfilling their mission.
